WUHAN'S FLOODING STORY

Settled side-by-side with the Yangtze River, the city of Wuhan historically has been suffering from annual flooding that has resulted in lost of lives and damages to the city's infrastructures and economic activities.

The extent of this damage was worsen with the rapid urbanisation of the city itself in the past decades. As the city continued to develop, the percentage of water impervious area increased, and thus resulted in uncontrolled and insufficient stormwater discharge to the nearby body of water

THE SPONGE CITY INITIATIVE

As an effort to reduce the extent of the damage caused by future storms, the Chinese government collectively initiated the 'sponge city' project on 30 major cities in China, including Wuhan. The goal of this project is to turn 20% of the city's surface to become water-permeable by 2020, allowing the city to retain 70% of the stormwater poured on to the city.

To achieve this goal, the government of Wuhan collaborated with various multinational companies to employ the latest water-permeable concrete technology on their streetscape. One of the results of the project R&D is an inorganic concrete admixture that we incorporate in our Exelmix permeable concrete
